Greninja had a bit of a crazy style-change going on back then. Although I used references in the first try, I couldn't seem to get this Pokemon's form right-- Pokemon are super tricky to draw, since they have specific shapes and everything-- so he ended up looking like some other creature with Greninja colors. ( o -o);
After some more practice over time, and seeing more references, I'm happy that I was able to get his face-n-head right.
The only real mistake I have here is just his bubbles at his legs, they should be at the knee joints, but I just remembered after I drew the first one down there. Whoopsies. Though, it doesn't change much of the pose.
I've grown to like Greninja for his character, depicting more like a silly puppy rather than a mysterious ninja thing. I also really like those "hyphen-eyes" as I call them, super simple-n-cute~
Funny how you can really change your views on a character with time, hm? That's completely normal, one way or another, and I feel better knowing I can still grow to like someone I normally didn't before.
Though, that can also happen the other way around, if you're not careful.
My siblings all say that Greninja looks kinda buffy in this shot. I guess it's fitting seeing as he's nowhere near nerfed in Smash 4, and I actually just wanted to make sure his shape wasn't too flimsy this time-- keep his limbs rounded as they should be.

When you really get down to it, he's still a Pokemon - so it could go some ways on what his nature could be. In general, those eyes make for very peculiar neutral expression.
Anyway, pretty decent work on this~ It's like how he'd be when not fighting, which is fun to look at with it's rather minding-his-own-business-like feel overall. I guess it's almost that to other ninjas, but just more approachable-
You know, I remember finding Greninja little too "drastic" as Froakie's evolution, considering how the former ones didn't really have anything hinting to it. But like you said, it must had been those eyes and that rather funny attempt to do the scarf with his tongue that had me warm up to it in the long run.
